Its not often that one comes across an excellent exposition of institutionalised racism in Malaysia. This video recording of a public forum on “Institutionalised Racism in Malaysia” is one such exposition.
The speakers were Mr. N. Ganesan, who is the national advisor to Hindraf, Dr. Kua Kia Soong, the director of Malaysia’s leading human rights organisation, Suaram and Associate Professor Dr. Azmi Sharom, law lecturer and prominent social activist. It was chaired by Dr. Lim Teck Ghee, the director of the Centre for Policy Initiatives.
Each of the speakers provide a coherent argument on who (the perpetrators are), how and why is racism institutionalised in Malaysia but using different framework.
In particular, the comparison between the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the apartheid regime is compelling.
Dr. Kua in turn drew attention to increasing fascism in Malaysia supported by institutionalised racism.
Dr. Azmi points out that these institutionalised racism is not compliant with the Federal Constitution and says “We’re all responsible for this. The whole bloody country is responsible for this (institutionalised racism). Racism is deep in us.”
If you need a lucid exposition on racism in Malaysia, this video is definitely worth a watch.
