Naila Shofia is a PhD candidate at the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Bocconi University, where her research focuses on how culture and religion influence development and democracy.

Tom Pepinsky is Professor in the Department of Government and a faculty member of the Southeast Asia program at Cornell University. He researches comparative politics and politi-cal economy with a focus on Southeast Asia.
