35 Childers Street, Canberra City
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR/Peoples Justice Party) chief strategist Rafizi Ramli rose to prominence last year for exposing the ‘cowgate scandal’ which involved a RM250 million criminal breach of trust: he disclosed three financial accounts related to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) and its chairman who was the husband of Wanita UMNO (the United Malays National Organisation’s women’s wing) chief and Minister of Women, Welfare and Community Development, Sharizat Abdul Jalil. More recently, he was arrested under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act (BAFIA) for this matter, though coincidentally at a time when he was raising questions about the RM960 million Ampang LRT extension project. The tender was awarded by Malaysian Prime Minister, who is also the Finance Minister, Najib Razak to George Kent (video), a manufacturer of water meters with no experience related to rail projects and had scored one of the lowest points in the technical and commercial evaluation for the project.
Rafizi is also believed to be the architect to key policy proposals such as the auctioning of Approved Permits (APs) for imported cars, abolishing higher education student loans, and making housing affordable, (among the many populists and radical ideas) that PKR have put forward in recent months.
An alumni of the elite Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), champion debater, star student and brilliant scholar (background in engineering and accounting), with a solid corporate profile (including senior positions with national oil company PETRONAS and government linked corporations such as Pharmaniaga), Rafizi is here in Canberra to meet Malaysians and those interested in Malaysia, and to raise the profile of NOW, the National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre, a non-profit organisation he started to encourage whistleblowers to come forward.
Do join us for an exciting session.
