In 2006, I made a number of posts highlighting the situation of Rohingya asylum seekers who are being detained on Nauru by the Australian government. Today – for the first time in a long time – there has been some media coverage of their plight. The Age has a long report on the men and their efforts to be resettled in Australia.
The report concludes:
As the men contemplated an uncertain future this week, Federal Parliament passed a motion that, in part, expressed concern about “the 500,000 displaced people in Burma and the further 150,000 displaced people on the Thai border in refugee camps”.
The hope of the eight men on Nauru is that this concern will be reflected in Australia’s response to their pleas for protection.
